COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT

In compliance with the Regional Law n° 94 of May 2, 1995, the Abruzzo Region has established the following awards to honor the memory and to promote the study of his writings.

THE IGNAZIO SILONE INTERNATIONAL PRIZE

to be articulated in four categories:

A) THE IGNAZIO SILONE INTERNATIONAL PRIZE in a single award of € 7.750,00 to be awarded to a well- known personality, or the author of an whose work (published in 2000-2001 in any language) is inspired by the values of freedom and justice that also inspired Silone.

Nominations for this award may be submitted by individuals or legal entities who wish to nominate themselves or someone wortly of this award. Each nomination, accompanied by a clear rationale and the pertinent documentation, to the

B) SCHOLARSHIP OF € 2.590,00 FOR THE BEST THESIS OR DISSERTATION ON THE LIFE AND WORKS OF IGNAZIO SILONE

Open to all graduates of italian or other universities whose degrees were awarded from academic year 1995/1996. Candidates shall submit an application together with three copies of their work, a detailed recommendation signed by a member of the thesis or dissertation committee, a copy of the degree, and biographical data including personal identification, address and telephone number.

One of the copies of the work will remain at the Centro Studi Ignazio Silone

The Award Committee may recommend publication of the work without compensation for the copywriting.

C) A TRASLATION PRIZE OF € 2.590,00

The Prize will be awarded to a good traslation of one of Silone‘s works published by the end of 2001, from Italian into another language, or translations into Italian or any other language of works that are no longer available in the Italian original will be considered.

Three copies of the published work shall be submitted.

D) N.5 AWARDS FOR STUDENTS FROM ABRUZZO’S HIGH SCHOOLS, OF 520 € EACH

The competitive examination, reserved to students from abruzzo’s high schools, consists in writing an essay on Ignazio Silone, as per the outlines sent from the region to each school, or, in any case , available at the studies centre “ Ignazio Silone “ in Pescina or at the “Agenzia per la promozione Culturale di Avezzano”.

COMPOSITION OF THE JURY

The jury is composed of the members of the Award Committee (art.3 of L.R. 94, April 2 1995) and by well-know representatives of the international cultural world.

The decisions of the Award Committee are final. All essays, nominations, dissertations and traslations must be received by 30 October, 2002 at the:

AWARD CEREMONY

The announcement of the winners of the various sections and the award ceremony will take place at the Centro Studi Ignazio Silone in Pescina, on December 7, 2002 at 10.00 a.m.

The present announcement also published in other languages, has official value in the Italian version.
