through places of worship

Many of the sacred places in Abruzzo today are witnesses to an extraordinary continuity in worship which has involved the whole region since earliest times.
This is the case, for example, of some of the grottoes. The sacred nature of grottoes dates from ancient times and is associated with the entire history of Man's culture.
Before Man became physically at one with the earth, through farming cultures, it was the ancestral adoration of the earth element which prompted him to make of the grotto a sanctuary, more than just a refuge.
