Reserves and natural oasis

Natural oasis of Abetina di Rosello

This area is located at approximately 1000 mts above the sea level. It is almost at the border with the Molise, in a territory that in other places is barren and desolated also because of the pastures it offered in the past to a high number of animals. This oasis is the Rosello green wood of firs, in the province of Chieti.
The wood that is crossed by the stream called Turcano (an affluent of the Sangro) is mainly made of Silver fir, Beech, Yew, Lime, Turkey oak, Hazel. This is also the Nordest area where the rare Maple of Lobelius lives. Beautiful and rich is also the underwood where it is possible to find the Holly and the Butcher's broom.
Along with these plants there are also the Crocus, the Alpine Squill, the Martagon Lily and numerous Wild orchids among which the very rare Epipactis purpurata. The Abetina di Rosello, a WWF oasis since 1992, is worth of a visit also by the people fond of botany. In fact, in the woods there are some Pine martens, Wolves, and Wild Cats but there are also some birds of prey such as the Goshawk, the Honey Buzzard, the Sparrowhawk, the Tawny Owl, the Long-eared Owl, or other nice and elegant birds such as the Jay, the Woodpigeon and the Mistic Thrush. There are many Amphibia too: Stream Frog, Agile Frog, Spectacled Little Salamander and the uncommon Spotted Salamander.
The paths among the woods are pleasant in all season, and visiting the oasis could be a nice excuse to visit uncommon Abruzzo places. Nice to see also the fall of the river Verde.
