Reserves and natural oasis
Feudo Ugni
This area is part of the borough of
Pennapiedimonte, in the province of
Chieti, and it is limited in the Northern part from the
torrent Avello. Its name derives from the Latin omnium or "of evervbody" since
when the Romans conquered this area, they left the property of this land to the original
inhabitants. This territory, located in the horst of the Majelia, is plenty of caves that
once offered a safe shelter to shepherds and brigands. The most famous cave is the Grotta
Nera, made by two cream-colored chambers, here there are many stalactites and stalagmites
along with smooth parts commonly called Latte di monte (Mountain Milk) which is a very
peculiar calcareous formation. The vegetation present in this area is strictly dependent
on the altitude. Above 2000 mts grows the rare Least Majella snowbell along with the
Apennine Edelweis, the Spring ok, the Snow ok and the Apennine Genipi. Among the beech
woods, there are tall flowers such as the Martagon Lily and the Mezereon.
There
are very wide woods of Mountain pines rich of Black blueberry. In the piedmont sides there
are woods made by mixture of different trees such as the Mountain Ulmus and the
Ash. The
faunistic wealth of this area is also very important. In fact there are some rare animals
such as the Orsini Viper which in Italy only lives in the central part of the
Apennines.
There are 120 different species of birds: the Peregrine, the Golden Eagle, the Willow
Tit,
the Alpine Chough etc. The Marsican Brown Bear is here very uncommon and the presence of
the Wolf from the Apennines is just a little more regular. The most common animals in this
area are: the Wild Cat, the Polecat, the Deer and the Abruzzo Chamois, these animals were
just recently reintroduced here. In the small rivers find their natural habitat the
Yellow-bellied Toad and the Dappled Salamander. The access to this reserve is forbidden to
the autovehicles while hiking is al1owed within the defined tracks. In order to use the
shelters built inside the reserve the authorization is provided by the State Bureau for
State Forests of Chieti.
