Reserves and natural oasis
Quarto Santa Chiara
This area is made by 485 hectares within the borough of Palena (CH). The altitude range goes
from a minimum of 1073 mts in Fosso Grottignano to a maximum of 1729 mts in Serra
Molione.
The tree vegetation is mainly characterized by the Beech, the Turkey oak, and the White
Hornbeam, in this environment there are both pastures and barren lands. This area is
populated by some important faunistic species such as the Wolf from the
Apennines, the
Marsican Brown Bear, the Roe Deer, the Wild Cat and the Pine Marten; as far as birds are
concerned there are some prey birds such as the Goshawk, the Sparrowhawk and the
Buzzard,
there are also some other birds such as the Long-eared Owl. The karstic plateau is
characterized by Sedges of Euro-Siberian origin. Among the most interesting and rare
plants some orchids need to be mentioned: Dactyloryza incarnata and the Nodding
Willowherb. There are also interesting migrant birds on the plateau: the
Crane, the
Greylag Goose, the White Stork. In the reserve one can only go on foot, along the marked
tracks and in small groups guided by the responsible personnel. This area can be reached
through the 8.8.84 that can be taken from the Piano delle Cinquemiglia or from the Valle
dell'Aventino. A fascinating way to reach this reserve is to go by train. The arrival
station is Palena on the railway line that goes from Sulmona to Carpinone and passes
through the whole protected area.
