This reserve is 378 ha wide and is particularly interesting both for naturalistic reasons and historical-archaeological ones. The boroughs involved in this reserve are Bolognano, that is in charge of running the area, and San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore both of them located in the province of Pescara. Inthis protected area there are many caves such as the Grotta dei Piccioni and the Grotta Scura. Where there are evidences of old human settlements. The tree dominant species are: Pines and Pubescent oak but, the expert can also admire some rare flower species such as the Valentian Coronilla, the Yellow asphodel and a number of orchids. The fauna is also very rich. Among the Amphibia there are the Yellow-bellied Toad and the Newts; among the Reptilia there are Aesculapian Snake and the Four-lined Snake. A large number of birds nests here, the Swift had been chosen as symbol of this reserve. Interesting is the presence of the Crested Porcupine and of the Otter in the waters of the river Orta. |
